Prague in Summer: Beer Gardens, River Days, and Beating the Crowds

Summer is when Prague's beer garden culture is at its best. Letná and Riegrovy sady are the two classics — plastic cups, long wooden tables, and views over the river or the city that easily turn one beer into three. Riegrovy sady in particular gets a festival atmosphere on evenings with a big football or hockey match on the outdoor screen.

The Vltava itself becomes part of the social scene: paddleboats near Charles Bridge, riverside bars with their feet practically in the water, and locals cycling or sitting along the embankments once the sun starts to dip.

The trade-off is crowds — July and August are peak season at Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and the Astronomical Clock. Arriving right at opening (most sights open by 9am) is the single most effective way to see the big landmarks without a wall of tour groups in every photo.

Evenings are the better time to explore the historic center anyway: the heat breaks, the day-trippers head back to their hotels or buses, and the same streets that felt like a crowd at 2pm feel like a different city by 9pm.
